I'll try to demonstrate the power for some strategies to encover properties of a given set, like considering unipotent maps of the set to itself and maps from the set to a fixed finite set. A less cryptic headline could mention Brouwer fixed point theorem, sum of squares and a not so trivial obstruction to some equi-subdivision property. As requested, this talk is tailored for a wide audience.
