摘要:
The numerical solution of the neutron transport equation plays a key role in a variety of applications, most notably in nuclear reactor design, but also in related areas such as optical tomography, where it models light propagation in biological tissue. Its mathematical and computational challenges have inspired the development of numerous approximation methods over the past decades.
This talk offers an introduction to the field from a numerical analysis perspective. We begin by formulating the transport equation and briefly discussing its well-posedness. Classical discretization techniques—such as the discrete ordinates method (SN) and truncated Legendre expansions (PN)—are then reviewed as foundational approaches.
We then turn to modern variational formulations that unify and generalize these classical methods, overcoming some of their shortcomings—such as the incorporation of boundary conditions and the facilitation of effective preconditioning—while providing greater flexibility in the choice of approximation spaces. In the second part of the talk, we focus on iterative methods for solving the resulting linear systems.
