Generic vanishing was proved by Green and Lazarsfeld about 30 years ago. This is a beautiful theory and has played an important role in classification of irregular varieties. In this talk, we first recall the main results of generic vanishing, the ideas of the proof, some related topics and applications, then introduce the recent progress in characteristic p, finally discuss some interesting problems.
