Abstract：This is a survey talk on the subject of the title above. In his lec-tures at Ohio State University in the late 70s, 

Eiichi Bannai proposedthe classication of (P and Q)-polynomial association schemes; he re-garded them as nite, combinatorial 

analogue of compact symmetricspaces of rank 1. I will trace the history back to the late 60s and ex-plain how the concepts of 

P/Q-polynomial association schemes arosein relation to nite permutation groups, coding/design theory. I willthen overview 

the progress of the classication in the 80s, 90s andthereafter. Finally I will present my personal view about the scopefor the 

classication problem.
