Multiple ergodic average is a central topics in ergodic theory with many applciations in combinatorics and number theory. While today we have many tools to handle such averages for systems with single or commuting transformations, our knowledge for systems with nilpotent actions is very limited. In this talk, we will talk about our recent attempts in extending the Host-Kra theory to systems with 2-step nilpotent actions, which leads to a joint ergodicity result for polynomials iterates of distinct degrees. This is based on the joint work with Andreas Koutsogiannis and Borys Kuca.
