Height and L-series are two of most important tools in number theory and arithmetic geometry. They were originally invented by Andre Weil in his Ph.D. thesis on Mordell―Weil theorem and his work on Weil conjecture. In this lecture, I will first review original work of Weil, and then survey recent developments.

张寿武教授是美国人文与科学学院院士（2011年）、美国数学会会士（2016年）和Simons基金会Fellow（2016年）、1998年国际数学家大会特邀报告人。他曾荣获斯隆研究奖（1997年）、晨兴数学金奖（1998年）和古根海姆奖（2009年）。除去研究工作，他还培养了一批华人数学界新一代杰出人才，包括张伟（MIT，SASTRA Ramanujan奖，数学新视野奖，ICM18），田野（科大96博，中科院数学院，杰青，长江，ICTPRamanujan奖），袁新意（伯克利）和刘一峰（耶鲁）等。
张寿武教授是从安徽和县农村走出的国际数学大师，普林斯顿大学教授，因在数论和算术代数几何方面的研究工作而著称于世。他分别于1983年、1986年和1991年在中山大学、中科院数学所和哥伦比亚大学获得学士、硕士和博士学位。他的杰出工作包括：Bogomolov猜想的证明，椭圆曲线上的Gross-Zagier公式在全实域上GL(2)型阿贝尔簇上的推广，平均Colmez猜想的证明等。
