Structure preserving methods refer to numerical methods that preserve the structures or other fundamental continuum properties of the underlying physical problems, such as conservation, symmetries, asymptotic behavior, positivity structures and maximum principles. Such methods are often found to provide improved numerical solutions. In this presentation, we will present some recent studies of structure preserving finite element discontinuous Galerkin methods, and investigate their application in wave propagation problems and gas dynamics under gravitational field. Numerical results show that structure preserving methods perform much better on relatively coarse meshes and are more efficient.
